Rory Carroll, a senior editor at
Autoweek,
confessed in a recent article
that he attended an auction in June to buy vintage signs on behalf of Edsel Ford II. RM Auctions, a major auction house for investment-quality classic cars, was offering the collection of Michael Dingman, who was a director of Ford Motor Co. for 21 years.
Edsel Ford II is a great-grandson of Ford’s founder, Henry Ford.
Carroll wrote that
Autoweek
‘s associate publisher and editorial director, Dutch Mandel, had “volunteered me” to serve as Ford’s surrogate. “A Ford family member buying Ford memorabilia at auction could have caused a stir, and the added attention could have drawn additional bidders to the site,” Carroll wrote. He acquired 11 of the 17 items on Ford’s list.
“Some of the more astute observers had begun to take note that I had won just about every item in the sale with the word ‘Edsel’ written on it, and that I had bid almost exclusively on Ford-related items,” Carroll wrote. (Source:
