Elkay Manufacturing Co., a family-owned maker of plumbing equipment based in Oak Brook, Ill., is one of the companies that have redesigned public water fountains to make it easier for users to refill water bottles, the
Wall Street Journal
reported.
The
Journal
article said that Elkay executives started seeing the need for a new design nearly ten years ago.
The article noted that in response to concerns about germs, Elkay has added antimicrobial agents to fountains’ mouth guards. The company also introduced mouth guards made of plastic instead of steel to reduce injury to children who are shoved by bullies while drinking at fountains. (Source:
