Marcy Syms succeeds her late father as Syms Corp. chairman

Marcy Syms, president and CEO of Syms Corp., will add the role of chairman to her duties,

the Associated Press reported.

Syms’ father, Sy Syms, the previous chairman, died in November at age 83.

Sy Syms founded the off-price retailer in 1959. By 1983, he had expanded the business and taken the company public, the AP report noted.

Marcy Syms has been president since 1983 and CEO since 1998. Last June, Syms purchased the Filene’s Basement chain. The company, based in Secaucus, N.J., runs 53 stores under the Syms and Filene’s Basement brands. (Source: Associated Press, Jan. 8, 2010.)
