PETA buys a tiny stake in Hermès

Animal-rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has bought a single share of Hermès International, worth about $360, on the Paris bourse,

Fortune

reported.

PETA acquired the tiny stake in the family-controlled company to further its protest of the company's use of exotic animal skins in its handbags and other products, the article said. The report cited a statement from PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman that said, “PETA will be campaigning outside the company and, as a shareholder, also working from the inside to demand a ban on exotic animal-skin accessories, including crocodile-skin bags and alligator-skin watchbands.

PETA recently posted a video showing animal abuse at what the organization said were crocodile farms that provide skins to Hermès. The company has said it is also shocked by the images and is conducting an investigation, but it said that the farm shown in the video was not owned by Hermès and did not supply the skins used in its iconic Birkin bags.
