Senator urges Newhouse to sell Times-Picayune

U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) sent a letter to Steven Newhouse urging him to sell the New Orleans

Times-Picayune,

media blogger Jim Romensko reported.

Newhouse is chairman of Advance Publications, which owns the newspaper.

Vitter wrote in his letter to Newhouse:

“In light of your decision to only print the

Times-Picayune

three times per week, and the multiple credible buyer groups that I know want to buy the paper and continue it as a daily, I urge you to enter into serious negotiations with them. Then I urge you to sell.”

Romenesko also reported

that New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson is interested in buying the paper. Benson wrote his own letter to Newhouse, stating, “I would welcome the opportunity to speak to you about my interest in purchasing the

Times-Picayune,

with others. If this is something that is an option, we can initiate this at your earliest convenience.” (Source: JimRomenesko.com, July 26, 2012.)
