Vandals strike out at Ireland's Quinn Group after ouster of family leader

The headquarters of Quinn Group, which was one of Ireland’s largest employers but fell out of family control after Sean Quinn lost more than 1 billion euros in failed investments, have been vandalized in a series of incidents. On Aug. 8, a BMW belonging to the man appointed to run the company was torched,

Bloomberg reported.

No one has claimed responsibility for destroying the car, and Quinn and his supporters condemned the incident, according to the Bloomberg report.

Since the ousting of Quinn, electricity poles have been damaged, five company vehicles set alight and the entrance of the company’s headquarters blocked with a large dumpster truck, the

Irish Times

reported.

Sean Quinn was once Ireland’s richest man. He started out selling gravel and sand from his father’s farm in the region where Ireland boarder Northern Ireland. The company grew into a group with interests in a range of businesses, including building materials, insurance and real estate. Creditor Anglo Irish Bank Corp. removed him from the company.

John Maguire, a spokesman for the Concerned Irish Business Group, a lobby group that supports Quinn, told Bloomberg, “Certain people want the new management out and the original management restored.”

Quinn and his family have sued for damages against Anglo Irish and are challenging the appointment of the receiver, the Bloomberg article said. (Source: Bloomberg, Aug. 30, 2011.)
