The
Washington Post
is weighting whether to charge readers for online access to its newspaper articles,
the
Post
reported.
The publication would charge readers once they have read a certain number of articles per month; it would also launch digital subscriptions, the report said. Print subscribers would receive free online access.
The
New York Times
started charging for online content in 2011. The
Post
report noted that Washington Post Company CEO Donald Graham “has long been considered skeptical about the wisdom of introducing a paywall.” But Warren Buffett, a former director of the Post Co. and “a confidant” of Graham’s has said he would introduce paywalls in the newspapers he owns, and the
Post
report implied that Graham is inclined to follow Buffett’s example.
The
Post
is also planning to raise the newsstand price of the paper, the article said. The publication’s online advertising has stalled, according to the report. (Source:
