Wawa sues family-owned Indian restaurant over name

Wawa, the family-controlled convenience store chain, is suing Wawa Curry Taste of India, a family-owned Indian restaurant in Kissimmee, Fla., according to

a report by NBC10,

Philadelphia's NBC News affiliate.

The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Florida on behalf of Wawa and its corporate arm, Wild Goose Holding Company, the report said. It alleges that Rakeshkumar “Yogi” Patel violated copyrights when he opened his restaurant in September 2013, after Wawa's convenience stores had entered the Florida market. Two Wawa stores are located within three miles of downtown Kissimmee, the report said.

Patel doesn't plan to fight the suit and can't afford a lawyer, the NBC10 report said. He

told the

Orlando Sentinel

that “wawa” means “good job” or “congratulations” in Gujarati Indian. (Sources: NBC10, Nov. 20, 2014;
