Gen 5 owner takes U.S. ice cream company into China




Michael Strange, the fifth-generation owner of Bassetts Ice Cream, a Philadelphia company founded in 1861, has been selling his products in China,

the

Philadelphia Inquirer

reported.

In less than five years, Chinese sales have grown to account for more than 20% of Bassetts’ business, the article said

Bassetts is America’s oldest ice cream brand, though it’s still a regional company, the

Inquirer

report noted. By some measures, the company is the U.S.’s largest exporter of American-made ice cream to the Chinese market; other brands with larger market shares in China make their ice cream outside the U.S., the article said.

The company exports up to 6,000 tubs of ice cream to China per month. Previously, its most-distant account was in Chicago, the
