Mitzi Miller, the editor-in-chief of Johnson Publishing Co.’s
Ebony
, is leaving the position after only ten months on the job, according to
a blog report by Richard Prince
on the website of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.
Before being named as
Ebony
’s editor, Miller had spent more than three years as editor of its sister publication,
Jet
, which stopped publishing a print edition, the report noted.
Prince’s report noted that a public relations firm released a statement that said Miller is leaving the magazine “to pursue new ventures that include creating stories for television and film.” Miller’s 2006 book
The Vow
was made into a Lifetime cable-TV movie.
Johnson Publishing CEO Desiree Rogers told Prince that Miller had been on leave for more than six weeks. Her predecessor as
Ebony
’s editor, Amy DuBois Barnett, “stepped down in a move said then to take the staff by surprise,” Prince wrote.
Prince cited a
Crain’s Chicago Business
report that noted that recent cost-cutting moves at Johnson Publishing include putting its historic photo collection up for sale and selling its headquarters on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, in addition to ending the print edition of
Jet
. The
Crain’s Chicago Business
report also said the company, which had originally moved its offices to three floors of rented space, has given up one and is now trying to sublet one of the two remaining floors. (Source. “Richard Prince’s Journal-isms,” mije.org, Feb. 20, 2015.)
