Tim Hussey, 59, the sixth-generation chairman, CEO and president of Hussey Seating Company in North Berwick, Maine, died June 13 after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Hussey generously shared his insights at
Family Business
Magazine’s Transitions East 2011 conference.
Mr. Hussey led his family business, which was founded in 1835, for more than 20 years. He succeeded his father, Philip W. Hussey Jr., as president in 1995 and became CEO in 1996. He was elected chairman in 2001.
Mr. Hussey was on a first-name basis with most of Hussey Seating’s 250 employees, according to the company. His mantra was, “We’re a family business — in it for the long run,” the company said.
Under Mr. Hussey’s leadership, the company was awarded contracts to provide seating for professional sports arenas nationwide, including Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies, and Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) called Mr. Hussey “a remarkable, kind and intelligent leader with a deep commitment to our state and to his community,”

Mr. Hussey was diagnosed with mucosal melanoma, a rare form of cancer, in 2014. He chronicled his battle with the disease in a blog,
“Beating It —Tim’s journey in kicking cancer in the ass.”
Gary Merrill, who had been Hussey Seating’s COO and CFO, will assume the role of president of the company.
