Weinstein brothers reconnect with Miramax

Brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who founded Miramax in 1979 and sold it to Walt Disney Co. in 1993, have signed a production and distribution deal that will enable them to collaborate with the company on new content as well as potential sequels to films in the Miramax library,

reported.

The brothers named Miramax after their parents, Miriam and Max. They continued a relationship with Miramax until a dispute with Disney over creative control in 2005, when they formed a new company, Weinstein Co., the report noted.

The Weinsteins tried to buy Miramax back from Disney in 2010 but lost out to a group of investors led by Colony Capital and Qatar Holding, the report noted.

Under the deal, Weinstein Co. will handle domestic distribution of films made under the agreement; Miramax will handle international sales. (Source:
